We've all maybe faced the experience of an animation not playing in PowerPoint due to a new or unusual video codec.  Has anyone found one that has reletively small file size and PPT can play without jumping through install hoops?

Yes, Kevin G. figured out that if you rename the .avi to .wmv it plays just fine.

This works of course only if the .avi was compressed with the wm9 codec. PPT doesn't seem to like a .avi with wm9 but does like it if it's a .wmv (which is the same codec with a different extension.)

So, theoretically, we could run the AVI through Windows Media Encoder using the WM9 codec and it should play fine in PPT?

Well it needs to be a .wmv so if you have an existing .avi then just rename the extension to .wmv but for future product compress a .wmv regardless.
