Whats the deal with these processors???...I'm so confused lately with all the different Intel processors....going by price I know which one is better, but is it really? Can anyone explain the difference in these??? Besides the obvious.
WS DUAL XEON E5320 1.86GHz, 8MB cache, 1.066 MHz FSB
WS DUAL XEON 5160 3.0GHz, 4MB cache, 1.33GHz FSB
WS DUAL XEON E5345 2.33GHz, 8MB cache, 1.333 MHz FSB
WS DUAL XEON X5355 2.66GHz, 8MB cache, 1.333 MHz FSB
Tom? Mark?

The new Intel Xeons are grouped into two categories. The 5100 Series CPUs are Dual Core processors whereas the 5300 Series are Quad core. Ultimately, the 5300 Series have two if the 5100 CPU’s side by side in one socket case. This would in essence give you 8 physical CPUs in one machine, or if you prefer, 8 buckets rendering in Max. The best way to benchmark them is to compare them to the highest speed 5100 series processor at an equivalent GHz speed and multiply by two. So: Xeon 5150 @ 2.66 GHz= 1.0 Performance Index Xeon 5160 @ 3.0 GHz = 1.2 Performance Index Xeon 5355 @ 2.66GHz = 2.0 Performance Index Here a benchmark for max 9
Sometime next spring, AMD will be shipping their quad core CPU that uses what is refered to as a "true" quad core. What this means is that all 4 cores are one single die, whereas the Intel has 2 dies side by side working as one. Intel's second generation quad core should be shipping about the same time as the AMD and will incorporate a "true" quad core single die as well. Intel's roadmap also has an 8 core CPU coming out by the end of 07 or the beginning of 08. My head is spinning. Whatever the case, the software needs to make the threading more efficient. Currently, max is one of the best threaded apps or rendering, whereas many of the others stall after 4 CPUs. Rumor has it that Intel is getting more involved in the development process by providing advanced compilers and coding techniques to pump up the speed.

All the Precision desktop lines, 390, 490, 690 and the T3400, offer either a single or a dual quad core chip. As for their other lines, I believe the Quad core is available on the XPS and Optiplex models.
