Hi,

I want to copy a group of objects at a number of places. later, if  i remove or add objects to this group, it should reflect in all other copies (instances). how can I do this in max? (This is very simple in AutoCad with Blocks).

I tried group and made instances, but when I add a new object to the base group, the others are not updated.

the same result for xref-objects. If I make xref-scene, I am not able to make multiple copies..!!

Any ideas...??

Cheers,

Jerlin

For it to work as groups, if you want to add or remove objects to one group and have it reflect on all the others I think you'll have to do it in sub-object mode (and you never thought you'd never find a use for the the DeleteMesh modifier ). Might also work if you do an attatch (again, basically a sub-object operation)

As a completely new piece of geometry I don't think it will work.

With xrefs, it should work, but you'll want to do an xref object, not an xref scene.

Thanks Steve.

I was trying to make a town planning model with typical villas and apartments. There are some options for each villas and I thought if the models are inserted as groups, I can simply replace the final approved option, so the entire city will be updated. Now it seems my villas should be a single object with all the trees and cars and other external features as sub objects. Then I have to apply a multi sub material too!

Is this the way you people working with similar town planning projects?

I don't think I'd drop everything down to one object. That could lead to being a big pita if you need to do editing further down the road.

I think an xref object should do what you need. just import your singular villa model as an xref and place where needed, then when you have the final design, save out that model as the same name/filename and it should replace itself in the xreffed scene.

We've been working with xref materials (it's an actual material type) lately for one of our projects with lots of options/people working on different parts. It's nice being able to update the materials in one scene and have it automatically update in all the files.
