I am working on some animations for the Maryland Intercounty Connector (ICC).  They are developing an informational video (through Siquis) that will go out to the public in a few weeks.  I've been having some fun being able to take some artistic licenses with the environment since they are not concerened about showing a particular part of the proposed toll way.  I was given some plan drawings and more or less made up the rest and scavenged for some of our past projects in the area.  Any CC welcomed:

Wow!

That is a beautiful scene. The low sun angle really adds some warmth to the scene, and 3D trees definitely add that extra-realism as opposed to billboards.

The grassed embankments have a nice variety in texture, but the only thing I could see that could possibly improve the image is to perhaps add some grass to the batters to add some depth (if it's possible). I always struggle to get earthworks batters looking as nice as those though.

Do you use VRay or mental ray as your renderer? Was there much post work on it?

Is the project really 10 lanes across ? I can only dream of doing something on that sort of scale!

Nice work

Regards

AM

Andrew,

Thanks.  I agree about adding grass.  It's in the plans along with some dirt/gravel on the shoulders.  The current grass material is a complex blend of maps with a stucco for the blend map.

It's V-Ray and no post on this one since it's a frame out of an animation.  Hope to post the animation soon too.  The road is actually only 6 lanes, but at this point there are 2 on-ramps that merge in by the bridge in the background.  The first draft of animation was amusing with most of the merging vehicles not timed yet.  All sorts of sideswiping and collisions.

From an engineering perspective:

1.  The main line skips usually line up with each other.  The skips are parallel across all of the lanes.

2. Skips usually 10' long with 30' gap in between.

3.  Any reflectors?

4. The sign on the right does not seem correct to me.  Wrong sign I think.  Also too tall.  Sign usually 7' in elevation from the edge of road to the bottom of the sign.  It looks way taller than the cars in comparison.

5. Noise walls are never exactly the same height.  This is due to the noise design software.  Walls should be higher at dips in the road and lower at the top of the grade.  On the left the wall should get taller, not dip with the ground.

6.  Needs some trash and debris/tire parts on the road/shoulders.

7.  How about a sign mounted on the bridge naming the cross street?

8. A lot of cars, not many SUVs, trucks, etc.

Wow! That looks excellent. Great work with the texturing. The road and grass are super-realistic.

The one thing I'm confused about is the sky. The sky looks much brighter at the horizon which might lead you to believe that the sun is setting in the distance. The shadow direction for the cars implies the sun is setting behind you. Maybe try to reverse the gradient of the sky and see how that looks.

Thanks for all the comments.  Carl, you have some good ones that I actually hadn't thought of yet.  I'll check some of those specs too, just to make sure I got them correct.

The sky is just the V-ray sky for now and it does look a little too blue for the time of day.  It could be my exposure settings on the phys cam too.  I plan to composite in and HDRI that has some mood to it (and matches the lighting).  I'll post an updated version next week.

Nice work Glen ..(as always) not much to comment but my eye is drawn to the area where the wall on the left hand side intersects with the grass.

It looks a bit too clean may be dirty up the bottom of the wall.

The white lines look a bit thin but that might be because of the size of the road. We don't get roads that big over here lol...

Hey Glen was there ever an update for this?  We worked on a big stretch of the ICC, but we didn't make anything this fancy.  And hey what ever happened with the animation?  Busy making the earth quake or something?

What kind of render times are you looking at here?

You PeeBeers, you sure do make some perty pictures.

Here's a frame out of the final.  I had lghtened up the pavement and tweaked a few things but budget determined the "pencils down" for this one.  I had tried getting some 3D vegetation in but it was killing the render times so I had to abandon it.

The animations were used in a video that I haven't seen yet.  I'll comp them together and post soon.

Funny. I read the PeePeers as pee beers.  We do that too.

I think the client gave us you rendering for reference since we didn;t have a full set of plan and no aesthetic data.  Nice work!
