This rendering was prepared for a public session discussing the proposed River St. Bridge in Boston, MA. Comments would be appreciated and helpful for future projects.

The modeling and lighting looks good here.

The shot looks and feels a bit cramped or claustrophobic. It would be better to pull back a little and show more of the environment. This will give a little more context to the structure and will also be somewhat forgiving on some texture issues that are quite apparent at this proximity.

The scene would also probably benefit from better placement of entourage. It definately needs some more cars, more strategic tree placement, and a line of train cars wouldn't hurt either.

I use entourage to fulfill several purposes: provide scale; lead the eye to the subject (focal point); hide errors or lack of detailed modeling.

Your scene looks good, but with a few adjustments I think it could have alot more realism and impact.

Eric: ditto Claudio's comments.  I would check into the glass material on the car.  I feels a little to Dish (blue and flat).  If it's not a pro material or Ach & Design, I'd suggest giving those a go.  I'm not a Mental Ray expert, but in Vray there needs to be "solid" geometry for the refrat of a glass material to render propoerly.  Perhaps the same is true in MR materials...

Thanks for your comments Claudio and Glen.

Something didn't feel right about the composition of the image and I think that the size of the environment and the lack of entourage have a lot to do with that. I'm just starting to become familiar with using mrProxies and the way that I populate my scenes with trees needs significant work. My collection of entourage is quite minimal so I think I need to invest some in a good package of 3d models and practice getting vehicles and people into my scene effectively.

For the glass, I believe I am using a mr arch&design material. I'll have to check on that one. The glass in the scene is all just planes with that material applied. If I add some shell modifiers I might be able to get better results.

Tight close-up shots rarely work alone so it's best to use them only when needed to zoom in on detail.

Placing trees is an art form unto itself! You get to play Mother Nature and Master Landscaper all at once. I use Forest Pro 3, Onyx TreeStorm, and V-Ray proxies.

I usually create spline boundaries first and then play around with their arrangment and density until I get something that looks natural and satisfies the entourage criteria I listed above.

Forest Pro 3 in damn near unbeatable for this demanding task!
