Just wondering if anyone knew why backburner is only showing that machines with more then 2gb of ram are showing that they only have 2gb of ram? Is this a 32 bit limitation?

I'm aware of the 3gb switch that can be used to allocate more ram to applications, and were using that, but it doesnt seem to make a difference.

Luke,

There is a way to limit what is being shown.  If you click on the little box next to the memory column it will bring up a dialog box to set theses preferences.  The default setting is "Show All".  I'd check there first. If that doesn't fix the problem, then Kauffman may have a suggestion...

Yeah, it's a 32-bit thing. Even with the /3GB switch setup, backburner just reports that first 2GB, even though 3dsmax on those machines will use more than that if needed.

so its just a flaw in the way its being reported, not limited performance?

correct. Those machines will use as much RAM as they can within the limits of Win32 and the /3GB switch.

Steve is correct that this is a limitation in 32bit Windows. While Win32 can address 4GB, the operating system segregates RAM allocation to 2GB for applications and 2GB for the OS. The 3GB switch can be useful in changing this allocation table to 3GB for applications and 1GB for OS, however, this only works for applications compiled to take advantage of this memory loophole. Max, many of the Adobe apps, Combustion and a few others are able. The caveat is that while the app can access the additional 1GB of data, it is not an entirely stable function.

Now, once you switch to a 64bit Windows, you are given access to the full 32bit 4GB memory space when using 32bit applications. 64bit apps on the other hand can address 128GB of physical RAM. That is why you would see 2048MB as the RAM allocation in Backburner for some machines and 4096MB for others; 2GB being the 32bit and 4GB the 64bit machines.
