ok guys, I got a bit of a problem that I cant seem to find a solution to and its mildly frustrating.

Basically what I have done is imported a dwg of an earth works model and I'm wanting to apply a surface moddifier to it. Thing is though, its made up of a heap of splines, and from what I understand, Max doesnt support branching splines, so where the splines intersect with eachother, i cant actually weld them. I'm just trying to create a frame that I can apply a surface modifier to, to make a surface.

Alternatively I can convert it to an editable mesh and that leaves me with a heap of verts - so my other question is, does anyone know of a way to create or know of a maxscript that will create a mesh out of a heap of points? I'm not sure if this is possible as it wouldnt know what order to create the faces in.

Finally, if i could just convert my splines to normal lines, I would be able to weld them. Does anyone know if this is a possibility.

I'm sure there is other ways around this, but I'm just curious if there is a way to solve this problem.

We are also facing the same sort of problem! We want to make a surface between two long open polylines. Hope the answer for Luke will help us too!

I don't think the surface modifier requires verticies to be welded or splines to be closed. It does, however require 3or 4 verticie patches (4 corners/edges). So, if you can get all your verts to be close together it should work. Adjusting the threshold int he modifier will give you some leeway with your precision.

Tom's right, they don't have to be welded, but they do need to be within a  certain threshold to create the surface.  Snapping is a quick fix.  A screen grab of the "spider web" would be useful to the rest of us so we are all on the same page.
