DV Artist: Brian Peterson & Tom Shannon (post effects/composite)

Project: Interstate 80 Video

Location: Southern Wyoming (typical area)

Software: 3DS MAx 8, V-Ray, Photoshop

These are two preview stills from an animation.  The animation starts with a nice sunny day and transitions to near blizzrd conditions with a semi truck passing on the left.  The effect is amazing, especially if you've ever experienced it.  All that's missing is the noise and vibration of the semi.  Brian also employed some unique mapping techniques for the roadway and terrain that turned out really nice.

This really turned out awesome. I love the attention to detail on the road surface. The tar and skid marks are great. So much better than just a repeating lofted texture. Great job guys!

Nice work guys, as Glen pointed out a little rocking from the truck as it goes past would have really finished it off. Nice work with the particles, textures and compositing. Great work fellas!

Brian could you elaborate on the mapping techniques used by any chance?

Thanks

Hey sorry for the late response, I was unable to post a response in this tread. Thanks for all of the comments.

The asphalt on the road was created with a blend material. In the top slot of the blend I had a asphalt material. The bottom slot had no material and was set to a dark color which would be used for the tar and oil streaks. The hard part was creating the blend map. The blend map is a grey scale image where the oil, dirt and tar were painted using varying shades of grey. The white areas of the map would be the asphalt and the grey area would be the dirt and tar.

If anyone is interested I can post some lowres images of the maps and or send the material.

-Brian

Brian,

Thanks for your responce. It would be great to get a look at the material; if you could post either the images or material which ever is easiest for you it would be great. Thanks

Here are a few low res versions of the blend and mix maps.

Roadway dirt map:

Roadway reflect map:

Roadway tar marks bump map:

Roadway snow blend map:

The material is pretty complex. I am planning a detailed tutorial for the future. If you are a PB employee I would be happy to send you the material with High res maps. Please let me know.

Mike I will send you the material if you are interested.

Brian

Thanks for posting those maps, it material looks quite interesting; and if you don’t mind I’d be more than interested if you could send me a copy.

Thanks

Mike
