FYI, those SD video standards are for DV only... Analog and full res SD are slighting larger.

It's just a nice graphical representation of different kinds of display resolutions. So if you knew what your target audience will be displaying your work on (TV, Monitor, etc..) then you will know the correct resolution to render at.
