Okay, we all know Photoshop and the .png format aren’t the best of friends. Well, now they are!
http://www.fnordware.com/superpng/
This plugin REPLACES the Photoshop png plugin. Now, pngs with alphas come in with the alpha in a channel, not as a layer! PNG saves are WAY quicker and smaller than the Photoshop plugin. And a LOT more!
Instructions:
1)Download the plugin
2)Go to: Photoshop/Plug-Ins/Adobe Photoshop Only/File Formats
3)Find and remove the png.8bi plugin (Move out of this folder, or delete it)
4)Copy the SuperPNG.8bi plugin to replace it
DONE!
Open Photoshop and when you go to save out a png, it will be listed as SuperPNG, and will have some options when you save regarding file size and save speed.
Keep in mind that PNG is a non-destructive format, so you can save smaller files and not lose any image information!
Enjoy!
UPDATE! It seems that the channel improvements ONLY apply to 48 bit PNG with alpha channels! If you use 24 bit + Alpha, it acts like it always did. Bummer, eh?

| If you open a 24bit+alpha image in Max (under File -> view image file) you can re-save it as a 48bit+alpha to be able to have the benefits of SuperPNG in photoshop. SteveJ
