It's too sample but it's my first 3D SketchUp work.  I just want to add a fish and drop it into the water.  But I couldn’t find the way to make a ball or sphere.  Yep, I got the tool for circle and so have not problem to make cylindrical.  I had run the sketchUp tutorial two times but didn’t find the answer(or I missed it?).  Farther more, I went 3D wharehouse and borrowed a well made fish there.  But it doesn’t let me ungroup or make change on the strokes.  How would you do if you want to make a fish and drop it into the water?

Thanks advance and any answer will be appreciated!

Hi Lin Wei,

I Like your question, a really serious one! I've also gone through the tutorials long before but didn't think of a sphere!!

well, its true that there is no direct tool to make a sphere in sketch-up! but after seeing your issue, I digged it well and found a solution (may not be the perfect one! But have a try).

Draw -> Follow me (or Tools -> Follow me, pls check the menu)

To make a sphere:

1.Draw a closed semi-circle perpendicular to xy axis. (arc + line) this is the basic shape.

2. Draw a circle at the base of the shape (will look like your ship and water table)

3.Followme -> highlight shape & circle, that's it!!

NB: The shape and path "must be" in contact (I'm not sure about this)

You can make any shape & path with this tool. try it out!!

Unfortunately, I don't have sketch-up now, to send you a sample, but i can send you some cad generated images to show the steps.

If anyone knows a better method pls share with us!

I got my sphere and my fish!!! Can’t do it without David Thorp and Jerlin!  pbviz’s is great!!!

Now we got two ways to do it.  Beside the way that Jerlin has posted here, there is another way:

1. From tool bar – Window – Components – Shapes (not draw but borrow it)

2. Also, when we borrow things from 3D Wharehouse or Shapes, we shouldn’t looking for the keyword "ungroup" or "unlock" to make them addable.  We should look for (right click on the model) "Explore", then we could use it as a template to make changes.

Now I am search for transparency but not found in SketchUp help and Index.  It must because I am still using Adobe keywords which SketchUp doesn’t recognize.  It must another name for transparency in SketchUp, what does it call and where? or maybe 3D don’t need transparency, how to make a class window then?

Hi, Sorry for the delay, I hope you might have already solved your problem with transparency! If not,

The transparency is in the materials. You can change the properties of the material and after rendering, you will see the effect. You can create any type of material and change its properities like transparency, glossiness, reflection etc.

Try, Materials, Material edit, Material library etc.

Have a nice day!

Thanks Jerlin. it works and I appreciate your help. Later better than none.

Now I am on Animation-Add Scenes. Just say, if you made a model car, then you go to Place Model (got a Google Earth map in SketchUp).  Your Added Scenes and want the car travel around roads. But when you saw your animation in Get Current View, realize that you need to travel longer distant,  but you didn’t zoom out enough at the first time (in other words, you didn’t get a map larger enough for the job).  Is a way to enlarge or change the background map without redoing all the work?  Please let me know how….. Meantime, I will try again…

Hi Lin,

I don't really use Sketchup for animation. I use 3Dmax. Anyway, what I understood is, you want to increase your ground area. If you scale your image the car path will be out of the road!! I think, you can increase the base (ground) dimensions and get more area of the image (same scale) and re-attach the image with same position. Hope this works!

Keep in touch,

Jerlin

Thanks Jerlin,

You are right.  I tried many times, but my cars are always out of paths.  Even after I increased the base, still does not work exactly right.  I gave up and went to a vacation in Santa Cruz-Board Walk, stayed on roller coasters for two weeks and have never even once out off a path. Now I’m back and waiting for a 3DS Max training in SF office (Sep.11-13th).  This way, I don’t have kill the SketchUp for this job.

Really appreciate your tip and would let you know whether gets better or worse…
